The 4th of July is right around the corner and that gives me the perfect excuse to be crafty. I am going to show you how to make your very own Pom Pom Garland, in Red, White and Blue! This little garland is so simple to make and it looks so darn cute hung on the mantel. No one will ever guess you made it with a ole’ kitchen fork.
Here’s how to make it:
Red, White and Blue yarn
Step 1: Choose one color of yarn to start with and rotate colors over and over to make each pom pom. Once you have chosen your color cut a medium length string and feed it through the middle prong on the fork. This will be used to tie it all together.
Step 2: Grab the roll of yarn and begin wrapping it around all 4 prongs on the fork – about 75 times. Be sure the wrap the yarn loosely around the fork and careful to keep your final medium length string from Step 1 pulled back out of the way.
Step 3: Carefully, without pulling the roll off of the fork, tie your medium string around the middle of the ball. Tighten it until it makes a bow shape and tie a knot to secure it. You should still have 2 long pieces hanging after it is tied.
Step 4: Once your bow is tied, remove the yarn from the fork. Find the two long strings and hold those back so that they don’t get cut. Grab your scissors and cut the loops in half on each side through the center. This will cause the pom pom to flare out.
Step 5: Once all the loops are cut, still holding back your two long strings, begin trimming the pom pom so that all the pieces are around about the same size.
Step 6: Now your pom pom should look like this! With two long strings.
Step 7: Now Using those long strings tie the pom pom to your craft string so that it is secure; trim the long strings to match the length of the others.
Step 8: Repeat, alternating colors until you have a full string of pom poms to complete your garland. You can tie little loops on the ends of your string for hanging. After complete, hang that baby somewhere for everyone to see!
I added a little extra patriotic touch to my mantel by layering on a USA flag banner. Thanks so much for trying out this DIY Pom Pom Garland!
